Not meaning to start this short piece off on a facetious note, but pot bellies are not confined to pigs! Not that pigs could use any flat stomach exercise tips of course :)
There's a misconception that the 'right' stomach exercise equipment will see a jelly belly flattened in a matter of weeks. It won't! So the first and most basic tip for getting your abs on display is to power walk or jog for 30 minutes 3 times a week at the very least. This will give your metabolism a boost and help melt the fat away that is hiding all your hard work.
#2 Limit the amount of sugar you consume. This one is important folks. Sugar is bad for us anyway for all manner of health reasons and it really deserves an article of its own. But relating to your flat stomach, you need to know that sugar adds empty calories and actually promotes weight gain. There are many things you can do to reduce sugar intake, and many of them will likely surprise you. Most of us consume one heck of a lot more sugar than we realise.
#3 - Pilates: If you haven't head of Pilates exercise, then it's time you did if you're serious about getting a flat stomach. Follow the plan and exercise at least 3 times weekly. Pilates is not just a stomach workout and it will tone your entire body, so this way you're getting an all-in-one exercise workout with a strong focus on your middle section.
#4 - Eat Fibre: 2 things crucial to a healthy eating plan are add sufficient fibre to your daily diet, and cut down on bad carbs. Wherever possible, try to cut down on white breads, potatoes, pastas and white rice. Brown rice and whole wheats are not only better for you, but they fill you up more and taste better too, once your pallet has adjusted. Leafy green vegetables are great also. #5 - Watch that Milk! This is one of those things that most know about yet shoes to ignore. People often don't realise just how much milk they consume in a day. Try to drink skimmed or semi skimmed milk instead of whole milk. #7 - Staying Hydrated, drink plenty of Water. Oh the importance of water though so many of us don’t drink nearly enough. Try to drink between 6 to 8 glasses a day, and more when in hot climates or when exercising. Water not only helps to fill us up, but it also aids in digestion. Let's not forget too, that the more hydrated we are the more energy we have.
# 8 - Knowing When to Stop It takes on average 3 hours for the stomach to become empty after a full meal. Many dieticians say that having a 'full stomach' at bedtime can not only slow down weight loss, but it can agitate sleep meaning you're not getting the quality kip you should.
Try not to eat anything for 2 to 3 hours prior to bedtime, and if you find this difficult, then at last attempt to cut this down to something like a light snack such as a small portion of fruit of vegetables.
# 9. More is less! That's more often not more food ;) most of us tend to eat on average 3 big meals daily, but if you're able to eat smaller portions more often say 5 times daily, this will stop the stuffing and also boost metabolism. Although this might be a hard suggestion to follow, those who have managed the change in eating habits have found it really does help to keep the weight off.
# 10. Reward your Efforts: Don't be too hard on yourself. Extremes in any pursuit are not good. Every once in a while make sure you indulge in a favourite food or beverage. Moderation is good for both body and mind. People who go all out and deprive themselves of all those foods and drinks they so loved, are the ones who usually give up on health and fitness before the halfway stage. By allowing yourself a little treat once in a while will keep the craving at bay, and WILL NOT turn your newly tuned stomach back into that gut bucket.
